Category: Internet Vendor Reviews

I will update my initial review to 3/5 stars because they did attempt to reship a second time. That said the second shipping was only marginally more successful that the first.

There were broken bags and bags with 100% loss. Less than 20% of my order (dollar wise) arrived alive (about 60% specimen wise). None of the more expensive shrimp survived and the majority of the survivors were painted fire red cherry shrimp… not worth paying the 70 dollars shipping twice.

I would suggest that if you even consider using this service (which I would strongly caution against) you specify that you are willing to wait until their next “transshipper” shippment as it seems to be the “safer” option. It will mean waiting 1-3 weeks before they ship out your order but it means that you are more likely to get live shrimp.

Initial Review

2 stars

I am very much pro buying local and this experience definitely made me re-affirm that stance. I figured 100 tiger shrimp for 40 USD was too good to pass up, even with the 70 dollars shipping, I decided to take a risk and give them a shot, I also figured that if I was paying for shipping I should add on some shrimp and make it worth the order, so I did just that and in the end my total order was 270+70 for shipping.

The order did arrive 4 days after the ship date (thank usps) which is not bad at all, however the shipper did not use any kind temperature stabilizer like phase 22 gel and also packed the shrimp 10 adults to 1 cup of water. Needless to say all the shrimp were dead on arrival and the seller said that they would reship if I paid shipping again. I had no intention of paying for shipping a second time when they said they would not include cold packs(I didn’t ask for cold packs) and didn’t know what phase 22 gel was.

They claimed it was a fluke but refused my offer to reship and I would pay shipping if it arrived alive (which I thought was fair).

In the end they refused to refund the cost of shipping even though it was their poor practices that cause the dead shrimp.

Lesson learned only buy from local breeders.

Additionally their communication was very slow, it took them several weeks to respond to questions.

Professional service and high quality shrimp that have a long history (bred by APB for over 7 years) of excellence.

APB ships small OEBT but I have never seen OEBT that have such nice color when so small. Most will not be colored up but when you see solid blue at 1/4th an inch you know you have very high quality stock.

I received 13 total shrimp instead of 10 and they all survived with 2nd day shipping.

Personally I recommend getting very young shrimp as you know you are more likely to get an even mix of sexes so in a month you end up with a strong breeding population. I have noticed when buying mature and sub-adult shrimp that you are more likely to end up with a higher number of males because the berried females will always be removed before sale. I think buying younger shrimp is always in your benefit unless you are getting a favor from a friend.

5 stars, Buy OEBT http://www.alphaprobreeders.com/orange-eye-blue-tigers-sale-10/

Pictures of the shrimp – all about 1cm, most OEBT don’t show any color until twice this size.

Update – I also got a batch of Mischling shrimp (Taiwan bee shrimp hybrid with Crystal red/crystalblack) also very small but kind of awesome.)

I ordered a batch of 8 but as you can see I got more than 8 🙂

Mischling shrimp acclimating

*BUYER BEWARE*

The Shrimp arrived quickly and professionally packaged; however this was obviously a cull of unwanted shrimp and not a random mix of shrimp and didn’t resemble the shrimp in the auction photos at all.I will say the general color grade of the shrimp was rather low, judging the shrimp after 36 hours acclimation to near perfect water parameters based on the scale provided HERE 1 is Dark Blue, 1 is Semi Dark Blue, 2 are  blonde, 6 are lighter than light blue. Update the Shrimp didn’t color up more than the initial picture.

Orange Eyed Blue Tigers

New arrival OEBT shrimp

My biggest problem with this seller is that instead of admitting they sent a cull of unwanted shrimp, they insisted that it was shipping stress and then when that didn’t pan out said I needed darker substrate. While I sit there looking at my awesome shrimp from aquaticacafe that are a deep dark blue on the same substrate as the cull sent by this seller. For a reference here are two of the shrimp from AquaticaCafe and two from Wicca. I ended up taking the 2 blonde and the 4 lightest blue males and moving them to my community tank and plan on letting them “mingle” with my established Tiger colony as an experiment and the rest are in my OEBT tank(turns out was a bad idea). I didn’t notice at the time but you can see a slight cloudiness in the shrimp sent by Wicca as well, a sign of a bacterial infection (that has since infected part of my native populations in 2 tanks)

To add further proof to my claims of infection and coloration here are two posts made by Wicca(27) on plantedtank. This is in a thread about her own losses to what I attribute to a bacterial infection where she claims that she cannot tell because all of her shrimp are deep blue/almost black oh and they are dying.

I used screenshots to prevent future edits (click to enlarge)

*Update* I have requested that the seller refund part of my money to help pay for the cost of treating my 2 tanks and cover some of the lost shrimp and have not heard back from the seller.

*Update 2* The seller refuses to even acknowledge that she could be the source of the infection, and have refused to refund any money. Seller has not disputed the fact that she sent me a cull of low grade shrimp despite what was pictured in her auction. Seller asked me to post a link the the above mentioned thread, I have no desire to do so, it is worth noting that the seller changed her claim of an infection to a claim of a contaminated drainage/fill hose after I mentioned that the shrimp she sent me were showing signs of bacterial infection.

*Final Update* – Almost all my tiger shrimp in 2 tanks were killed. 23 OEBT and almost 40 Tigers/Super tigers. Very few of my other shrimp were effected.

Final thoughts

I will not do business with this seller again and suggest you take great caution before purchasing from this person. Honestly I don’t mind being sent a cull of shrimp (even if it was deceptive), I don’t mind that they happened to have an infection, my problem with this seller is that they consistently told blatant lies to try and cover their ass instead of owning up and working to make the customer happy or at least giving me a chance to fight off the infection. The seller stated they don’t care about making money(while refusing a partial refund) and this was just a hobby so they didn’t care about negative reviews and loss of profits. This translates to me as the seller does not care about her customers and only sells things to further fund her hobby at the expense of others.

I have won multiple auctions from this seller; additions after a win and combining shipping is always a super easy with this seller. Plants have always arrived healthy and quickly and professionally packaged.  Everytime I have ordered multiple items from this seller I have also received a “free gift” plant/plants. I am not sure if the free gift is standard as he does not advertise it, but I always find the “gifts” to be interesting additions to my tanks.

I highly recommend this Aquabid seller.

At the suggestion of Shrimpinista(https://oebluetigershrimp.com/2012/02/23/vendor-review-shrimpinistaaquabid-aquaticacafe-com/ ) I purchased some food from Ken’s Fish. I purchased both Ken’s Premium Vegetable Flake and Ken’s Premium Spirulina Max Flake and my shrimp love it. I used to feed them algae tablets and they would eventually find it and then I will have to remove the left overs and it was a pain. Both of these foods my shrimp come searching for. I highly recommend either of these foods for any high end shrimp tank. I also bought some golden pearls to feed to the fry when they are born/hatched, since I am still waiting on that I cannot comment on how well it works but so far I am very impressed.

Also I will say that the quantities for the price are quite generous. I also Purchased a few items from their sale section which was really cool and has some rather good deals.

Shipping pricing was average.

Overall a top notch vendor.

The vendor of my first patch of OEBTs and extremely helpful and informative. I asked more questions than I probably should have and must of been someone annoying, but the answers kept coming and she was very polite about it. As this blog moves forward I hope to reproduce some of that information so people can find it more easily in the future. What I am getting at is that it was a great buying experience and I would recommend buying from this person if they are selling the Orange Eye Blue Tigers again in the future. (I believe it is a limited quantity operation as are most OEBT breeding programs. Oh one more thing within 5 minutes of adding these shrimp to my tank I saw them breed. (nothing spectacular and takes about 1 second in total, and now that same female is the one mentioned here : https://oebluetigershrimp.com/2012/02/21/houston-we-have-an-egg/

Keep in mind that picture is taken in very low light conditions in tea colored water so the colors do not show up as vibrantly as they actually are.

Speaking of color, the shrimp I received were almost all  blue (11blue and 2 blonde) and the two uncolored juvenile extras sent also colored up to blue.  The color was almost entirely dark blue and almost black on some of the shrimp, these were very high grade orange eye blue tiger shrimp that she had for sale.

I have made several purchases from Bob’s Tropical Plants (also known as Mgamer20o0 on Aquabid).

I find generally purchasing directly from the site is https://www.bobstropicalplants.com/ ( http://www.bobstropicalplants.com/shop/en/  store website) to be as good of a deal as from aquabid and you don’t have to wait or compete with other bidders to get what you are looking for.

The quality of the livestock and shipping is high end and very competitively priced. I highly recommend the Indian Almond Leaves for any shrimp tank that needs a slow and mild reduction in PH or just wants to improve the general health of their shrimp. I noticed a spike in successful breeding ( berried females) 10 days after introducing the IAL.

I have Some normal tiger shrimp, some Neocaridina “Orange,” and some green shrimp from Bob’s. All seem healthy and happy and some of the bigger ones have turned up berried.

Shipping is pretty standard and he will refund you if your shipping is significantly less than charged.
